Getting to Durness & Getting Around

The Geopark has put together this interactive map of Durness showing everything from the location of toilets to cycle pumps, cash machines to cafes to waste bins.
Durness is 74 miles from Dornoch and 103 miles from Inverness. The last 52 miles of both journeys are a spectacular drive along single-track roads.
Always pull into a passing place to allow traffic that comes up behind you to pass, and be aware there may be a vehicle round the next corner, and no room for both of you. Be prepared to stop, frequently!
Never ever drive a camper van in convoy with another: leave at least a passing place between you or there will be no room for both of you in a passing place, and reversing round bends on a single track road isn't easy, especially when other traffic comes along.

The drive from Inverness takes at least 2.5 hours.  The Durness Bus links in with train services arriving at Lairg.

The NC500. Billed as a great road trip, but viewed with mixed feelings by many local people. Find out why, and what and how you, as a visitor, can help.
Here are 3 different views from the press,  positive and  negative:
  • On the road: Has the North Coast 500 been a blessing or a curse? from The Herald
  • Horrified locals blast tourists from The Mail Online
